Brief description: The SCFP Summer Internship Program is offered through support from the Office of the Provost Division of Outreach, the Department of Public Policy Leadership, and the SMBHC.

The program includes: an extensive hands-on teaching experience at SCFP for students ages 12–16; a five-week course on nonprofit management; the development and execution of a fundraising project; and a weeklong trip to Oxford where interns teach a daily enrichment course. During residence at SCFP, the intern will receive feedback and support from a mentor teacher. Interns will also be responsible for the documentation of several Freedom Project student experiences through interviews, photography, and video.

Eligibility: Students must have completed their sophomore year in order to be eligible.

Brief description: Full and part-time volunteer and paid internships are available in the Summer, Fall, and Spring for undergraduates and advanced students interested in a hands-on learning experience with a public policy research institution. Interns work at a variety of tasks and have the opportunity to attend seminars and discussions with leaders in public policy.

Eligibility: A college junior in good standing with at least a 3.0 GPA (except for Anne Armstrong Leadership Award applicants, who must have at least a 3.5 GPA and demonstrate strong potential for leadership in international affairs).

Brief description: The Institute for Humane Studies sponsors this public policy internship, allowing students to work with policy experts, journalists, and academics in an exploration of market-based solutions to social and economic problems. An introductory seminar is followed by an 8-week internship at a research institution or a public interest law firm.

Brief description: The Department offers several programs designed to provide students with direct experience in the field of foreign affairs. Interns may work in Washington, DC or at embassies overseas. Duties vary according to assignment, from scientific/technological tasks to administrative projects to logistical support; in general the internships are seen as excellent preparation for a career in international affairs. Duration is usually one semester during the academic year or at least 10 weeks in the summer.

Eligibility: U.S. citizens in good academic standing; a broad range of majors acceptable including (but not limited to) business administration, social work, economics, management information systems, journalism, biology, the physical sciences, and international affairs; must have completed 60 credit hours before start of internship.

Location: Half are in DC, some in other large US cities; remainder are in overseas embassies.

Brief description: Undergrad students work on one of several Gilder Lehrman research projects that rely on the intensive study of primary sources. At the end of the 5-week program, Scholars will have completed a project that will result in a publication credit as co-editor. Scholars participate in weekly meetings with eminent historians and visit leading repositories of American historical documents, printed materials, and materials culture.

Eligibility: Sophomore or junior standing, interest in pursuing a major in American history, and demonstrated academic excellence in the field.

Brief description: Students participate in a 9-week living-learning program, studying and working in Historic Deerfield museum houses. Fellows attend seminar sessions on History and Material Culture Studies, and work with Historic Deerfield curatorial staff. The program fosters exploration of museum studies and of New England history and material culture.

Brief description: The Institute for Humane Studies sponsors 10-week summer internships for those engaged in or planning careers in journalism and wishing to learn how classical liberal or libertarian principles can operate in that field. Brief description: The Office of Research Training and Services offers internships and visiting student awards to increase participation of U.S. minority groups who are underrepresented in Smithsonian scholarly programs, in the disciplines of research conducted at the Institution, and in the museum field. This program is designed to provide undergraduate and beginning graduate students the opportunity to learn more about the Smithsonian and their academic fields through direct experience in research or museum-related internship projects under the supervision of research and professional staff members at the Institution’s many museums, research institutes, and offices.
