ACCOUNTANCY
ACCY 420. Independent Study. Reading and research in a topic in the field of accountancy. (1 – 6 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Course may be repeated only once.
AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES
AAS 504: Research in African American Studies. Intellectual history of research about the African American experience and the rise of African American studies. Critical examination of past and current research and its significance to various disciplines. (3 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Instructor Approval Required, Senior or above standing required, AAS 201 or AAS 202
AAS 498: Afri-American Studies Directed Study. Individual study of an issue or topic in an area of specialization where the student has demonstrated the interest and competence necessary for independent research. The issue topic must be selected in conference with appropriate faculty. (3 – 6 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Instructor Approval Required, Senior or above standing required, 15 credit hours required in AAS courses.
ART
ART 334. INTRODUCTION TO FIELDWORK TECHNIQUES. Examination of the theory, practice, and tradition of documentary field research, including the use of photography, film and video, and tape recorders. Special emphasis of documentary study of the American South. (Crosslisted as S ST 334, ANTH 334, and SOC 334). (3).
AH 308: Art History Internship. Individually planned work experience in a museum, gallery, or art organization. This course may not be used to satisfy the fine or performing arts requirements for the B.A. and B.S. degrees. (1 – 3 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Junior Standing Required, Instructor Approval Required. NOTE: This class can also be used for the New York Internship Experience, the Washington Internship Experience, or for Study Abroad.

ART 410: Art Internship. Individually planned work experience relating to a major area of emphasis. Open to art majors of junior standing or with consent of instructor. Art 490: Directed Individual Problems. (1 – 6 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Instructor Approval Required.
ART 491: Thesis. This course requires the design and fabrication of a cohesive body of artwork presented through a professional quality exhibition. (1 – 3 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Art 405: Pre-Thesis Forum (Minimum grade: C), Senior or above standing required, and Admission to the BFA program.
BIOLOGY
BISC 491: Directed Study in Biological Sciences I. Independent research project of mutual student/faculty interest conducted under the supervision of biology faculty. Requirements include a research paper and/or presentation. Students must contact a faculty sponsor before enrollment. May be repeated for up to 3 hours cumulative credit. (Two hours per week per credit hour attempted). (1 – 3 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Bisc 160/161 & 162/163: Biological Sciences I & II, Biological Sciences I & II Laboratory (Minimum grade: C), Instructor Approval Required. NOTE: This class can also be used for Washington Internship Experience.
BISC 492. DIRECTED STUDY IN BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES II. Similar to BISC 491 except that the credit hours cannot be applied to the degree requirements of a major or minor in biology. Prerequisite: BISC 491 and consent of instructor. (1-3).
BUSINESS
BUS 500. BUSINESS INTERNSHIP. Internship open to business students of junior or senior standing or to MBA students. A business field experience of at least 10 weeks or full-time employment is required. (May be repeated once.). (3). (Z grade). This course would work for economics and finance majors also.
BUS 400. SPECIAL TOPICS IN BUSINESS. A seminar for special topics in business, either for discussion or for individual research projects. Senior standing only. (1-6).

CH E 407, 408 CHEMICAL ENGINEERING PROJECTS. Specific topic investigated by each student; report due at the end of each semester. (1-3, 1-3).

CHEM 251: Introduction to Individual Research. Research project conducted by the student under faculty supervision. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 hours of credit. May not be used for major or minor credit. (1 – 2 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Chem 105: General Chemistry I and Chem 115: General Chemistry Laboratory I (Minimum grade: D), Consent of Department Chairperson Required. NOTE: This class is designed for 1st year students doing laboratory research. Students with Sophomore standing should use CHEM 351.
CHEM 351. Individual Research. Research project conducted by the student under faculty supervision. May be repeated once for a maximum of 9 hours of credit. Prerequisite: CHEM 222, 226 (Minimum grade: D), and Consent of Department Chairperson. (1-3).
CHEM 463. Senior Research. Research project conducted by the student under faculty supervision. Written report and either poster presentation or oral seminar presentation required. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 hours of credit. Prerequisites: CHEM 226 (Minimum grade: D), and Consent of Department Chairperson. (1-3).
CINEMA.
CINE 397: Internship in Cinema. Internship with a significant cinema component. Students will produce an analysis of the internship experience. They will also produce a significant academic work, with an option for a written paper or to produce a work in another appropriate medium. (3 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Consent of Cinema Minor Director Required.

C E 497. CIVIL ENGINEERING PROJECTS. Special problems or independent study in civil engineering research and design. Prerequisite: senior standing or consent of instructor. (3).

COMPUTER SCIENCE
CSCI 487. SENIOR PROJECT. Each student conducts an in-depth study of a current problem in computer science or a related area. Upon completion, the student presents the results in both oral and written forms. Prerequisite: 6 hours of CSCI 300+ classes. (3).
CSCI 490. SPECIAL TOPICS. Study of topics in computer science according to interests of instructor and students. (May be repeated once for credit when the topic varies.) Prerequisite: CSCI 211 and CSCI 223. (3).
CSCI 495. UNDERGRADUATE COMPUTER SCIENCE INTERNSHIP. Internship in approved settings to enhance the educational experience of the student through supervised training in a professional computer science environment. Completion of an internship is recommended for all students but this credit does not count toward completion of degree requirements. Prerequisites: consent of instructor. Z grade. (3).

ENVS 385: Environmental Studies Internship. Internship with a business, a non-profit organization, or a government agency that includes a significant environmental component. Written analysis of internship experience and related academic paper required. (3 Credits) PREREQUISITES: Consent of Environmental Studies Director Required.
FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE
FCS 482. PRACTICUM IN HUMAN DEVELOPMENT. Individually planned work in business or agency relating to human development. Prerequisites include senior standing as an FCS major in the human development emphasis area, the consent of the instructor, and a minimum GPA of 2.5 in FCS course work. (3).
FCS 483. PRACTICUM IN DIETETICS AND NUTRITION. Individually planned work/field experience in one or more facets of the dietetics and nutrition area. Experiences must be approved by the student’s adviser. Prerequisites: FCS 311, 417, 461, 462, consent of the instructor, and a minimum GPA of 2.00 in prerequisite courses. (3).
FCS 484. PRACTICUM IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT. Individually planned work experience in one or more facets of the hospitality industry. The work experience must be approved by the student’s adviser. Prerequisites: senior standing and completion of four of the following courses with GPA of 2.00 or higher in FCS 361, 461, 462, 463, 467, and MGMT 371. (3).

FIN 445. INTERNSHIP IN INSURANCE AND RISK MANAGEMENT. On-the-job experience with a firm engaged in insurance and/or risk management. As well as performing job duties, students will analyze the firm’s operations, management, strategic plans, and growth prospects. Prerequisites: FIN 341 and consent of instructor. (3-6).

G E 421. GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING DESIGN. Geological engineering design by the application of rock mechanics, soil mechanics, geology, geophysics, remote sensing and hydrology to geological and engineering problems. The taking of the national Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination is a requirement of this course. Prerequisite: G E 420. (3).

ES 473. PRACTICUM. Supervised experience in an approved professional setting to total 200 clock hours. Prerequisites: Senior rank; 2.5 GPA in professional core; 24 professional core hours complete; consent of adviser. (3).

ES 493. INTERNSHIP. Full-time internship to provide application of curriculum content through supervised experiences. Internship locations are limited to departmentally approved sites. All exercise science and professional core courses must be completed prior to internship. (12).
